The Iacocca
Mustang Registry.

In 2009, 45 Mustangs were handcrafted to honor Lee Iacocca on the 45th anniversary of the original pony car. Most were never documented. This is the only registry tracking all of them — built from factory letters, owner records, and years of research.

The story of these cars
The cars

Coachbuilt by Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters. Styled by Michael Leone. Sold through Galpin Ford in LA. Each one numbered, hand-finished, and unique.

The legacy

Lee Iacocca created the original Mustang in 1964. These 45 cars were built to mark 45 years of that legacy. His name is on every dash plaque.

The archive

This is the only active registry for all 45 Iacocca Mustangs — verified, maintained, and open to anyone with information about an unlocated car.

Lee Iacocca

Lee Iacocca shepherded the original Mustang into existence in 1964 — one of the most consequential product launches in automotive history. The Iacocca Silver Edition was conceived to honor that legacy on its 45th anniversary, produced in the same spirit of American ingenuity that defined his career.

Michael Leone brought the Iacocca Mustang to life through his design vision. His work — a custom fastback profile that referenced the classic Mustang silhouette while standing entirely on its own — resulted in one of the most distinctive limited-edition American muscle cars ever built.

How they were made
The Build Process.

Each Iacocca Mustang began as a standard 2009 Ford Mustang GT and was transformed by Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters into a hand-finished coachbuilt vehicle. What follows is the most complete documentation of that process currently known.

01
Base vehicle selection

Each car started as a 2009 Ford Mustang GT, fitted with the 4.6L 3-valve V8 producing 320 horsepower. The GT was selected for its performance platform, Tremec TR-3650 5-speed manual transmission, and structural foundation that would support the custom bodywork. Base vehicles were sourced through Galpin Ford in Los Angeles.

02
Custom fastback bodywork

Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA hand-formed the signature fastback roofline — the defining visual element of the Iacocca edition. The roofline was shaped to reference the classic 1965–1966 Mustang fastback profile while integrating cleanly with the S197 platform. Each panel was fabricated and fitted individually.

Documentation note
Gaffoglio’s involvement has been confirmed via a factory letter dated September 10, 2013, signed by Marcelo Gaffoglio. The letter confirms production totals, color variants, and select build configurations.
03
Panoramic glass roof (select cars only)

Two of the 45 cars — production numbers #40 and #42, both black — were built with a panoramic glass roof. This required additional structural reinforcement and custom fabrication beyond the standard fastback build. These two cars represent a unique sub-variant within an already rare production run.

Factory confirmed
Roof configurations for #40 and #42 confirmed via Gaffoglio factory letter (September 10, 2013).
04
Performance upgrades

All cars received a Ford Racing handling package including upgraded struts, shocks, lowering springs, front and rear sway bars, and an adjustable rear panhard bar. 14-inch Brembo front brakes were installed on most cars. A select number of vehicles were optioned with a factory Whipple 2.3L twin-screw supercharger, bringing output to an estimated 400–500 horsepower.

05
Interior & badging

Each car received a black leather interior with a diamond-stitch pattern, an Iacocca-badged leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an individually numbered dash plaque. 20-inch chrome wheels with custom “I” center caps completed the look. The interior treatment was consistent across all 45 cars with minor variation in options.

06
Delivery & sale

All 45 completed vehicles were delivered to and sold through Galpin Ford in Los Angeles, California. Each car was assigned a sequential production number. Sale pricing, delivery records, and first-owner documentation varies by car — the registry is actively working to fill these gaps through owner outreach.
